In a letter to Alice Hoschedé, Claude Monet described this view: the coastal town of Antibes set against pink and blue mountains, in the golden glow of mid-afternoon. That's exactly what this Monet diamond painting shows.

Light shimmers across the scene, and the colors stay rich from the gardens to the far peaks. Lovely for anyone who has ever wished they were on the Riviera.

Monet's Winter on the Riviera

Monet spent the first months of 1888 in Antibes, on the French Riviera, painting the town, the sea and the mountains across the bay. The Mediterranean light was a challenge for a painter used to Normandy and the Seine, and he wrote often about trying to get its brightness onto canvas.

The Salis Gardens view looks across trees toward the old town and its walls. The original is in the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio.

Why Monet Painted Antibes Again and Again

Monet liked to paint the same view at different hours, and Antibes gave him a fresh challenge every day. In letters home to Alice Hoschedé he described the town glowing gold against pink and blue mountains. He came back to Giverny with a group of canvases that showed how far Impressionist color could go in strong southern sun.

What to Look for in the Painting

The trees in the foreground frame the view like a window. Through them, the town sits low on the water, and the snowy peaks of the Alps rise faintly behind. Monet keeps the far distance pale and soft and saves the strongest greens and darkest strokes for the gardens close to us.

How This Monet Works as a Diamond Painting

Impressionist paintings turn into diamond art well, because Monet built them from small dabs of color. The sky and water are broad bands of pale blue and pink, while the trees in front are full of mixed greens. Drill the sky first, then the mountains and town, and finish with the foliage.
