Who Painted the Smoking Skeleton?

Vincent van Gogh, in the winter of 1885 to 1886, while he was briefly a student at the art academy in Antwerp. The cigarette is widely read as a student joke about the academy's stiff drawing lessons. The small original now belongs to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

Its title is usually given as Head of a Skeleton with a Burning Cigarette. It is darker and more muted than anything people tend to picture when they hear his name.

Van Gogh's Short Time at the Antwerp Academy

Van Gogh enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in January 1886, hoping for formal training. He clashed with teachers who wanted careful copies of plaster casts, and after only a couple of months he left for Paris, where his brother Theo was living.

Drawing skeletons was a standard anatomy exercise, and the joke pokes fun at it. It also shows his dark humor, and his own fondness for tobacco: pipes turn up often in his self portraits.
