In the fall of 1889 Van Gogh painted The Mulberry Tree, and his passion for nature runs right through it. As an autumn diamond painting it's a great match for the season: hang it in the entry in October and leave it up through Thanksgiving. It works for beginners and experienced crafters alike, and the texture builds nicely as you go.

Where Van Gogh's Mulberry Tree Hangs Today

Van Gogh painted this mulberry tree in October 1889 while living at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where the hillsides gave him olive groves, cypresses and orchards to study. The canvas is now in the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, California, so you can see it in person on the West Coast.

Van Gogh's Year in Saint-Rémy

He entered the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole by his own choice in May 1889, after his crisis in Arles. In about a year there he painted around 150 canvases, among them The Starry Night, painted that June.

When he was well enough, he walked out into the fields and hills nearby. Autumn trees like this one gave him a chance to set strong yellows and oranges against deep blue, a pairing he loved.

The tree stands alone on rocky ground, its trunk and branches twisting like the cypresses and olives he painted that same year. That sense of a living, moving tree sets his Saint-Rémy landscapes apart.

Mulberry Tree Diamond Painting: Placing Drills on Swirling Brushwork

The tree's leaves burn yellow and orange against a deep blue sky, laid on in short, curling strokes. Diamond painting turns those strokes into textured runs of color. Work the sky first since it is the calmest area, then the rocky ground, and save the foliage for last as the most rewarding part.

In the leaves, follow the curl of each stroke as you place the drills. It keeps the sense of movement Van Gogh built into the tree.
