Paul Gauguin painted Mata Mua in 1892 during his first stay in Tahiti. The title means In Olden Times, and the scene shows island life through bold shapes, lush greenery and graceful figures.

As a Gauguin diamond painting it brings a warm, faraway calm to a living room or sunroom, and every bead catches some of that tropical light.

Gauguin's Mata Mua and Tahiti

Gauguin sailed to Tahiti in 1891, hoping to find a life untouched by Europe. Mata Mua, painted in 1892, imagines the island's past: women play music and dance around a carved figure of the moon goddess Hina, beneath a large tree, with mountains rising behind.

The original belongs to the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid.

Who Was Paul Gauguin?

Gauguin worked as a stockbroker in Paris before he became a full time painter, and he first exhibited with the Impressionists. In Brittany, at Pont-Aven, he and his circle developed a style of flat color and strong outlines. He spent most of his last years in French Polynesia and died in the Marquesas Islands in 1903.

What to Look for in Mata Mua

The big tree trunk splits the picture in two, with music on one side and dancing on the other. Colors are chosen for mood, not accuracy: orange ground, violet shadows, deep greens. Gauguin's Tahiti was partly real and partly a dream of a lost past, and this scene leans toward the dream.

He wrote about these years in Noa Noa, an account of his first Tahitian stay.

A Gauguin Diamond Painting Tip

Gauguin painted in flat areas of bold color with dark outlines, which translates neatly into drills. Start with the big tree trunk and the foreground, then fill the mountains and sky. Save the detailed figures for the end, and fill each color area right up to the dark outlines, and the shapes stay as bold as Gauguin drew them.

The warm greens and oranges look especially good in natural light. See more of art history's great names in our famous paintings.
