Instead of painting what he saw, he painted what he felt. Kandinsky Paint by Numbers: Abstract Art Made Simple
Wassily Kandinsky (1866 to 1944) is widely seen as one of the pioneers of abstract painting. Born in Moscow, he left a career teaching law to study art in Munich at the age of 30, and spent the rest of his life exploring how color and shape could work like music. Our Kandinsky paint by numbers kits turn his bright compositions into clear numbered sections, which makes abstract art surprisingly relaxing to paint.
Kandinsky Composition 8 (Composition VIII, 1923)
Painted in 1923 while he taught at the Bauhaus, Composition VIII is built from circles, triangles and crisp lines floating on a pale background. It is one of the best known Kandinsky abstract paintings, and the original belongs to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Our Composition 8 paint by numbers kit is rated beginner thanks to its clean shapes and flat color, and it also comes as a Composition 8 diamond painting.
Kandinsky's Life in Three Chapters
Munich and the Blue Rider
In Munich and the village of Murnau his colors grew bolder and his forms looser. In 1911 he and Franz Marc founded Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), and he published his book Concerning the Spiritual in Art.
The Bauhaus years
From 1922 to 1933 he taught at the Bauhaus in Germany, alongside Paul Klee. His work became more geometric, with circles, grids and precise lines.
Paris
After the Bauhaus closed in 1933 he moved to Neuilly-sur-Seine near Paris, where he kept painting until his death in 1944.
