What Is Kandinsky's Composition IV?

Kandinsky painted Composition IV in 1911 in Munich. It is one of ten large Compositions he considered his most important works. The first three were destroyed during World War II, so this is the earliest one that survives. It hangs in the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf.

Look closely and you may spot Cossacks with long lances, a blue mountain topped by a castle, and a rainbow.

Why Did Kandinsky Call It a Composition?

He sorted his work into three kinds. Impressions came from something he had seen. Improvisations came out quickly and from feeling. Compositions were the big ones, planned slowly through many studies, and he borrowed the word from music on purpose.

Music mattered deeply to him. He said a performance of Wagner's Lohengrin in Moscow made him see colors, and he spent his career trying to make painting work the way sound does.

Reading the Picture

Two black lines, the lances, cut down through the middle and split the canvas in two. The left side is busier and darker, with figures clashing. The right is calmer and lighter, with reclining shapes. The bright colors between them read as a clash that is starting to settle.

Composition IV Diamond Painting: Working Block by Block

Abstract designs suit diamonds because there's no face or fine shading to get wrong. Each color area is a clear block. Sort your drills by color before you begin, then work from top left to bottom right so finished areas stay covered.
