Lines, circles and blocks of color collide all over Composition 8, and somehow it all feels like music. Kandinsky famously linked painting with sound, and you can almost hear this one.

Building it up shape by shape is oddly satisfying. A Kandinsky diamond painting that suits a modern living room or a musician's studio.

Kandinsky's Composition VIII, 1923

Wassily Kandinsky painted Composition VIII in 1923, soon after he began teaching at the Bauhaus. It is now in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. Kandinsky believed colors and shapes could work on people the way music does, and he gave his most ambitious works musical titles like "Composition."

Here, circles, triangles and lines float on a pale ground in careful balance.

From Storm to Order

Kandinsky's earlier Compositions, painted in Munich before the First World War, are wild and crowded, full of swirling color. After years back in Russia, he came to the Bauhaus in Germany, a school that joined art, design and architecture. His style changed there, becoming cooler, sharper and more geometric.

Start with the large black circle near the upper left, ringed with a purple glow. It acts like a strong opening note. From there, sharp triangles, checkered squares and thin lines spread across the canvas, some crossing, some running parallel. Kandinsky thought of the circle as the most balanced shape, and the triangle as the most active.

Building the Composition 8 Diamond Painting Drill by Drill

Each shape has a clean edge, so this is a satisfying piece to work section by section. Fill the light background first, then the large circles and triangles, and finish with the thin lines that connect them.

The fine lines are only a drill or two wide in places. Use a single drill pen tip and press gently, so the lines stay straight and the shapes on either side keep their edges.
