Ernst Haeckel was a German biologist who also drew like an artist. Plate 49 of his Kunstformen der Natur shows sea anemones from the group Actiniae, arranged with almost decorative symmetry.

This Haeckel diamond painting is an inspired gift for a biology teacher, a scuba diver or anyone with a soft spot for vintage science illustration. It looks right at home in a study or beside a bookshelf.

What Are Actiniae?

Actiniae are sea anemones, soft-bodied relatives of coral and jellyfish that cling to rocks and wave rings of tentacles to catch food. Ernst Haeckel drew them for plate 49 of Kunstformen der Natur, published in parts between 1899 and 1904, and arranged them almost like a decorative poster, each animal opened up to show its radial symmetry.

Haeckel, the Scientist Who Drew

Haeckel (1834 to 1919) spent his career as a professor of zoology in Jena and described thousands of new species, many of them tiny sea creatures. He drew constantly and believed nature itself was the greatest designer. His plates were meant to show that order, and designers in the Art Nouveau years borrowed freely from them.

What to Look For on the Anemone Plate

Each anemone is shown from a slightly different angle: some from above, as a flower of tentacles, others from the side, with the stalk visible. Look for the repeated circles and rays, and for the way the colors shift from the center of each animal toward the tips. The dark ground makes every form stand out.

Haeckel Diamond Painting: How the Anemones Work in Diamonds

The tentacles and frilled discs are full of fine color changes, and in diamonds they catch the light the way wet tentacles do underwater. Fill the dark background first so the animals stand out, then work through one anemone at a time, center to edge.

It makes a fun gift for a marine biologist, a diver or a science teacher, and looks good beside a bookshelf or an aquarium. Find more designs among our diamond painting kits.
