Ernst Haeckel drew ferns the way other people draw cathedrals. This design comes from plate 92 of his Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), and it shows off the intricate, fractal structure of fern leaves.

A fern diamond painting like this is made for botany fans, science teachers and plant parents with a shelf full of greenery.

Haeckel's Ferns, Plate 92

Ferns belong to an ancient group of plants that reproduce with spores instead of seeds, and Ernst Haeckel loved them for their branching, self-repeating leaves. In plate 92 of Art Forms in Nature, he arranged several species into a balanced, almost symmetrical design, half botany lesson and half decorative print.

Haeckel worked from real specimens, and the shapes stay accurate even when he arranges them for balance. Each species on the plate has its own leaf pattern, from broad, wavy fronds to lace fine ones.

Victorian Fern Fever

Haeckel's ferns followed a long fern craze in Britain, which the writer Charles Kingsley nicknamed pteridomania in 1855. Collectors hunted rare species in the countryside, grew them in glass cases in their parlors and put fern shapes on pottery, textiles and book covers.

Haeckel carried that love of fern shapes into the age of Art Nouveau, setting real species into a design that is accurate enough for a botanist and ornamental enough for a wall. It also suits anyone who keeps ferns on a windowsill.

How the Fern Fronds Work as a Diamond Painting

Each frond splits into smaller leaflets, which then split again, so the design is full of narrow lines of green. That makes it a steady, detailed project. Work one frond at a time from the base outward, and fill the plain background between them last so the shapes stay crisp.

The finished piece suits a home office, a plant-filled sunroom or a science classroom. Collect more of Haeckel's plates with the Batrachia diamond painting kit, his study of frogs, or the Lacertilia diamond painting kit, his plate of lizards.
