Ernst Haeckel's Frogs

Ernst Haeckel was a German zoologist who also drew beautifully. Between 1899 and 1904 he published Kunstformen der Natur, or Art Forms in Nature, a set of one hundred plates showing animals and plants arranged almost like ornaments. Batrachia is the plate devoted to frogs, with each one posed to show off its shape and skin pattern.

His plates later inspired Art Nouveau designers across Europe.

What Does Batrachia Mean?

Batrachia is an old scientific name for frogs and toads, from the Greek word for frog. In Haeckel's time naturalists used it for the tailless amphibians. The plate gathers several kinds side by side so you can compare them, the way a museum drawer of specimens might.

A Scientist with an Artist's Eye

Haeckel trained as a doctor before turning to zoology, and he spent much of his career at the University of Jena. He named thousands of new species and was a passionate supporter of Darwin. Drawing was how he studied, and he believed the beauty of living forms was worth showing for its own sake.
