Sea squirts, of all things. Ernst Haeckel drew these tiny ocean creatures for his Ascidiae plate and made them look like stained glass, all ornate shapes and fancy detail. It's biology dressed up for a masquerade ball.

This Haeckel diamond painting is a great conversation piece for a study, a classroom or the science lover who likes their art a little strange.

Ernst Haeckel's Art Forms in Nature

Ernst Haeckel was a German biologist and illustrator who described thousands of new species. Between 1899 and 1904 he published Kunstformen der Natur, or Art Forms in Nature, a series of one hundred plates showing jellyfish, radiolarians, corals and other creatures arranged in symmetrical, almost ornamental layouts. Ascidiae is his plate of sea squirts.

The book reached far beyond science. The architect René Binet based his monumental gate for the 1900 Paris World's Fair on Haeckel's drawings of radiolarians, and Art Nouveau designers borrowed freely from his pages.

What Is a Sea Squirt?

Sea squirts are small, soft ocean animals that cling to rocks and filter water for food. They look simple, yet their larvae have a basic backbone-like rod, which makes them distant relatives of animals with spines, including us. Haeckel shows them glowing in greens, golds and corals against black.

They get their common name from the jet of water some squirt out when touched. Adults lose the larval rod once they settle and attach themselves to one spot for life.

Diamond Painting Haeckel

The black background fills fast and makes every color pop. Haeckel liked strong contrast, and the drills make the most of it. The creatures are detailed and symmetrical, so complete one at a time, working from its center outward. Checking your symmetry as you go keeps each sea squirt balanced, the way Haeckel drew it.

It makes a striking piece for a study, a classroom or a bathroom with dark walls. For another ocean piece, see our Humpback Whale diamond painting.
