Ernst Haeckel and Art Forms in Nature

Ernst Haeckel (1834 to 1919) was a German biologist who named thousands of new species and coined the word ecology. Between 1899 and 1904 he published Art Forms in Nature, a set of 100 detailed plates showing everything from jellyfish to orchids. Lacertilia is his plate of lizards, arranged with almost decorative symmetry.

A Scientist With an Artist's Eye

Haeckel was one of Charles Darwin's most energetic supporters in Germany, and he spent his career showing how living forms are related. He was also a skilled draftsman, and it shows: every scale and claw is studied, then set into a balanced arrangement on the page.

Lizards are a less familiar subject for him than sea creatures, which makes this plate a favorite with reptile fans and anyone who keeps a gecko or bearded dragon.

Why This Lizard Diamond Painting Works

Haeckel's plates are full of clean outlines and repeating patterns, which suit diamond painting well. The lizards' scales become rows of tiny facets that catch the light. Start with the background, then complete one lizard at a time, head to tail, so each pattern stays consistent.

Look at how the bodies curve. Following that curve as you place the drills keeps the rows of scales flowing naturally rather than looking like a grid.

Building a Haeckel Gallery Wall

Framed side by side, his plates make a striking natural history display for a study or classroom, and the lizards make good company for his sea creatures and plants. For another of his studies, see our Filicinae diamond painting kit.
