Ernst Haeckel's Orchids From Art Forms in Nature

Ernst Haeckel (1834 to 1919) was a German zoologist who drew the natural world with scientific care. His book Kunstformen der Natur, or Art Forms in Nature, came out in installments between 1899 and 1904 and contained 100 plates. Its orchid plate gathers many species onto one balanced, almost decorative page.

Why Orchids Fascinated Naturalists

Orchids form one of the largest families of flowering plants, with tens of thousands of species. Their shapes are so varied that Charles Darwin wrote a whole book in 1862 on how they are pollinated by insects.

Haeckel was Darwin's best-known champion in Germany, and his orchid plate shows the same delight in variety: lips, spurs and speckled petals set side by side for comparison.

How This Orchid Diamond Painting Comes Together

Each bloom has its own pattern of petals and color, so work one flower at a time. Fill the background around a flower before moving to the next; that keeps your rows straight and stops you from leaning on finished drills. The fine petal edges come last.

Speckled and striped petals are where the detail sits. Take those in short rows, checking the chart often, and the markings will read clearly from across the room.

Where to Hang Haeckel's Orchids

It suits a study, a sunroom or a plant lover's living room, and it sits well beside real plants. Find more designs in our diamond painting kits.

If you grow orchids yourself, hang it near the pots and compare Haeckel's drawn species with the ones on your windowsill.
