Ernst Haeckel's Art Forms in Nature

Ernst Haeckel was a German biologist who lived from 1834 to 1919 and drew the living world with an artist's eye. His book Kunstformen der Natur, or Art Forms in Nature, was published in installments around 1900 and gathered one hundred detailed plates of organisms arranged in symmetrical, almost ornamental layouts. Muscinae is one of those plates.

The Latin name refers to mosses, which Haeckel drew as delicate, branching forms.

Why Draw Mosses So Closely?

Mosses are tiny, simple plants with no flowers and no true roots. They spread by spores held in small capsules on thin stalks, and that is what Haeckel wanted to show. Magnified on the page, a patch of moss turns into a forest of stems, leaves and capsules, each one drawn with care.
