Ernst Haeckel and Art Forms in Nature

Ernst Haeckel was a German biologist who drew the living world with the eye of an artist. Between 1899 and 1904 he published Art Forms in Nature, a set of one hundred plates showing jellyfish, radiolarians, sea creatures and more in strict, symmetrical layouts. Chelonia is his plate of turtles.

Haeckel trained as a doctor before turning to zoology and spent his career at the University of Jena. He was one of Charles Darwin's strongest supporters in Germany and drew some of the earliest branching trees of life.

What to Look for in the Turtle Plate

A turtle shell is made of bony plates covered by scutes, the hard tiles you see on the surface. Haeckel loved that natural geometry, the way each scute fits its neighbors like a mosaic, and he arranged the animals so you can compare shells, heads and flippers at a glance.

Chelonia is an old scientific name for turtles, from the Greek word for tortoise.
