The Story of Van Gogh's Irises

In May 1890, Van Gogh painted this bouquet in his last days at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, just before he moved north to Auvers. He made two still lifes of irises that month, one against pink and this one against yellow, which now hangs in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

The pink version is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. A year earlier, in May 1889, he had painted irises growing in the asylum garden, a canvas now at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Why the Yellow Background Matters

He chose yellow on purpose. Violet and yellow sit opposite each other on the color wheel, so each makes the other look stronger. In diamonds that contrast becomes even sharper, as the purple petals glitter against the gold behind them.

Look also at the dark outlines around the leaves and petals, a habit he picked up from Japanese prints. They keep the crowded bouquet from turning into a blur, and in drills they give each petal a clear edge to work toward.
