John Singer Sargent in Venice

Sargent (1856 to 1925) was born in Florence to American parents and grew up moving around Europe, so Italy always felt close to home. He returned to Venice many times over his life, often sketching from a gondola in watercolor, with quick, sure strokes and a sharp eye for light on stone and water.

He often stayed at the Palazzo Barbaro on the Grand Canal, home of his American friends the Curtis family, whose guests also included the novelist Henry James. His painting An Interior in Venice shows the Curtis family in one of its grand rooms.

Sargent's Eye for Light on Water

Although he made his name as a society portrait painter, Sargent found more freedom in his travel pictures. He painted Venice from unusual angles, low to the water and tucked into side canals, often cropping buildings at the edge as if catching a passing glance.

Look for the reflections. He let colors from walls and boats break up on the water in short, loose strokes, which is why his canal scenes feel full of movement even when nothing much happens in them.

How to Approach a Venice Diamond Painting

Canal scenes split naturally into zones. The water gives you rippled bands of blue and green, the buildings hold warm creams, pinks and ochres, and the shadows under bridges and doorways are the darkest. Start with the sky, then the buildings, and do the water last, since it reflects colors you will already have used.

The finished piece looks right in a hallway or reading nook. See more famous paintings available as kits.
