The Story of Monet's Water Lily Pond

Monet moved to Giverny in 1883, and in 1893 he bought extra land and dug a pond, planted with water lilies and crossed by a Japanese style bridge. The pond became his main subject, with around 250 paintings of it. The largest are the huge murals at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris.

He bought his lilies, including new colored varieties, from the nursery of Joseph Bory Latour-Marliac in southwest France. In 1901 he enlarged the pond, giving himself even more open water to paint.

Why Did Monet Paint Water Lilies?

The pond was a subject he could shape himself. He planted it, had gardeners tend it daily and studied it at every hour. The lilies let him paint what interested him most: light, reflection and the surface of water, with sky, clouds and willows seen only as reflections.

In his last years cataracts clouded his eyesight, and his colors grew warmer and his brushwork broader. He had surgery in 1923 and kept painting the pond until his death in 1926.

Where Can You See Monet's Water Lilies?

After World War I ended, Monet offered a set of large water lily panels to the French state. They were installed in two oval rooms at the Musée de l'Orangerie and opened to the public in 1927, a few months after he died.

Other Water Lilies canvases hang in museums across Europe, the United States and Japan, and the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris holds a large group of his late pond paintings.

Water Lilies Diamond Painting: Pads and Reflections

Most of the canvas is water, full of soft blues, purples and greens where the sky reflects. The lily pads and pink blooms are clearer shapes on top. Fill the water first in rows, then the pads, and place the flowers last.

It suits beginners and seasoned crafters, and looks lovely above a sofa or in a bedroom. Light catching on the facets echoes the way Monet's water seems to glitter, and the soft colors change with the light in the room through the day. You will find more like it among our diamond painting kits.
