Monet's Seine Near Giverny

Monet settled in Giverny in 1883 and lived there until his death in 1926. From there he often painted the Seine and its quiet side channels, and Jeufosse lies a short way downriver. In this autumn view, a branch of the river runs between banks of turning trees, with the water picking up their colors.

Autumn on the river gave Monet rich material. The low sun turns leaves copper and gold, and the reflections double every color in the scene.

Painting the River From a Boat

Since his years at Argenteuil in the 1870s, Monet had worked from a small studio boat, an idea he took from the landscape painter Charles-François Daubigny. Sitting low on the water let him place trees, sky and their reflections almost on equal terms, which is exactly what you see here.

Around Giverny he came back to these stretches of river many times, and in the late 1890s he painted a whole series of misty mornings on the Seine.
