The Story Behind Monet's Garden at Montgeron

In 1876 Monet stayed at the Château de Rottembourg in Montgeron, near Paris, as a guest of the collector Ernest Hoschedé, who commissioned decorative panels for the house.

This garden view is one of them. The Hoschedé family later became part of Monet's own life: after Ernest went bankrupt, his wife Alice moved in with the Monets and eventually married Claude.

The panels were meant to hang as part of the room's decoration, which is why the dark trees frame the scene like a stage and open onto a bright patch of garden and water.

Where Impressionism Got Its Name

Two years before the Montgeron panels, Monet showed Impression, Sunrise at the first group exhibition of 1874. A critic mocked the title, and the name Impressionism stuck to the whole movement.

The quick touches of color you see in this garden are exactly what that critic disliked and what collectors like Hoschedé came to love.

From Montgeron to Giverny

In 1883 Monet, Alice and their combined families settled at Giverny, west of Paris. He spent the rest of his life there, planting the flower garden and later the water garden that gave him his famous water lilies. Montgeron was an early taste of the garden painting that would fill his later years.

Diamond Painting Impressionist Flowers and Water

Monet's dabs of color turn neatly into drills. Clusters of red blooms sit against layered greens, beside rippling water full of blues and reflections. Do the water first, then the dark greens, and finish with the reds, which sparkle most against the completed foliage.

It suits a living room, a hallway or any wall that gets good daylight. Find more Impressionists among our famous paintings.
