Claude Monet's Impression, Sunrise is the painting that gave Impressionism its name, after a critic mocked the title in 1874.

What you see is Le Havre harbor at dawn, wrapped in morning mist, with shapes that blur into the water and sky. Recreated as an Impression Sunrise diamond painting, all that haze picks up a gentle shimmer. It is a small piece of art history for the wall.

How Impression, Sunrise Named a Movement

Claude Monet painted the harbor of Le Havre, his hometown, at dawn in 1872. He showed it in 1874 at the first group exhibition of the painters who would become the Impressionists. The critic Louis Leroy mocked the title in a review, and the name stuck. It now hangs in the Musée Marmottan Monet, Paris.

That first show was held in the former studio of the photographer Nadar in Paris, organized by the artists themselves outside the official Salon.

What to Look For in the Painting

In the foreground, small rowboats sit dark against the water, with figures standing in them. Behind, the masts, cranes and smoking chimneys of the port fade into blue haze. Monet barely draws anything. He suggests it with quick strokes and lets the mist do the rest.

The orange sun is tiny, yet it is the first thing anyone sees.

Where Is Impression, Sunrise Today?

It is in the Musée Marmottan Monet, which holds a large collection of his work. In 1985 it was stolen from the museum along with other paintings, and it was recovered in 1990 and returned to the walls.

Impression Sunrise as a Diamond Painting

The picture is almost all mist. Blues and grays blur the boats and cranes, and the only strong note is the small orange sun and its reflection on the water. In diamonds, that haze picks up a gentle shimmer.

Fill the misty sky and water first, working in rows. Save the sun and its trail for the very end. It makes a fine gift for an art history fan. Browse more of our diamond painting kits.
