Those red lilies are what make this one pop, bright against the shimmering pond. Claude Monet spent years painting the light on his water garden, and here it's all reflection and color. As a Monet diamond painting it sparkles like sun on water, and it's a calming project to sit with in the evenings.

Monet's Water Garden at Giverny

Claude Monet moved to Giverny, northwest of Paris, in 1883. A few years later he bought extra land and dug a pond, filled it with water lilies and crossed it with a Japanese style footbridge. For the rest of his life the pond was his main subject. He painted around 250 water lily pictures.

The bridge, the willows and the lilies all came from his own planning. He even needed permission from local officials to divert water from a nearby stream to feed the pond.

Why Did Monet Paint Water Lilies?

Monet loved gardening as much as painting, and he once said he owed having become a painter perhaps to flowers. He designed the pond himself, with gardeners to tend it, so he could paint the same small world in every season and every hour, from misty mornings to evening light.

As the years went on he dropped the banks and the sky, until the canvases showed only the surface of the water and what floated on it or reflected in it.

Red Lilies and Reflected Light in a Monet Diamond Painting

Monet was not painting flowers so much as light on water. The sky, clouds and plants reflect on the surface and blur into one another, and the red lilies are the only sharp accents. Against all that cool blue and green, red pulls the eye right away.

In diamonds those reflections take on a real shimmer. Fill the water first, then place the red blooms. Work the blues and greens patiently, since that is where the reflections live.

See Monet's Work in Person

His huge water lily murals fill two oval rooms at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris. He offered them to France after the First World War, and they went on view in 1927, the year after his death. Smaller water lily canvases hang in museums all over the world, from Paris to Tokyo and New York.

Late in life cataracts clouded his sight and shifted the colors he saw, until surgery in 1923, and some of his later water lilies lean toward reds and browns. For more from the Impressionists and other masters, browse our famous paintings.
