Monet's Summer at Pourville

In 1882 Claude Monet spent months in Pourville, a small resort near Dieppe on the Normandy coast. He painted the cliffs, beach and fields above the sea again and again, and this path through the wheat toward the water is one of the views from that stay. The loose strokes show Impressionism at its most relaxed.

The chalk cliffs of this coast, with the open sea below them, gave him dramatic views within a short walk of where he stayed.

What to Look For in the Wheat Fields at Pourville

The path pulls your eye down through the field toward the strip of sea, a simple device that gives the picture its depth. Notice how the sea is laid in with calm, even blues, while the field is busy and textured, full of short strokes that catch the wind.

Monet worked outdoors on these clifftops, and the pictures from this stay, of cliffs, a lonely customs house at nearby Varengeville and the beach, point toward his later habit of painting one place many times.

Pourville Diamond Painting, One Drill at a Time

The wheat is a warm mix of golds, ochres and greens in short strokes, which gives you lots of small, scattered color. The sky and sea are calmer bands of blue. Start with the sky, then the sea, and finish with the wheat and the path. Short clusters of drills echo his brushwork.
