Gentle blues and still water make this one of the most restful pieces you can work on after a long day.

Claude Monet spent the last decades of his life painting the lily pond in his garden at Giverny, and this 1916 canvas comes from that late period. As a Monet diamond painting, it is slow and soothing, and it brings a quiet patch of garden to a bedroom wall.

Monet's Late Water Lilies

Claude Monet bought land at Giverny and from 1893 turned part of it into a water garden, with lilies and a Japanese style bridge. It became his main subject for the rest of his life. By 1916 he was painting very large canvases for the series that eventually became the water lily rooms at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris.

In these late works the bank and sky vanish, and the whole picture becomes the surface of the water.

Why Did Monet Paint Water Lilies?

Monet designed the pond the way a painter would. He diverted water from a small branch of the Epte river to feed it, planted lilies in several colors and set willows, irises and bamboo along the banks. Over nearly thirty years he made around 250 paintings of the pond, following how light, cloud and season changed its surface.

The 1916 canvases come from a time of loss and war. His second wife Alice had died in 1911 and his son Jean in 1914, and the First World War was being fought not far away. To hold the huge canvases he built a large new studio at Giverny in 1915.

Where Can You See the Water Lilies Today?

After the armistice of 1918 Monet offered a set of large panels to the French state, encouraged by his friend Georges Clemenceau. They were installed in two oval rooms at the Orangerie, which opened to the public in 1927, the year after his death. Other water lily canvases are spread across museums around the world.

In his last years cataracts clouded his sight, and his colors grew warmer and stronger until an operation in 1923 helped restore his vision.

Water Lilies as a Diamond Painting

With no horizon, the design is mostly soft blues and greens that shift slowly across the canvas. That makes for long, quiet stretches of drill placement. The lily pads add small clusters of pinks and yellows.

Work in rows across the water and treat the lily pads as little rewards along the way. It suits a bedroom or bathroom wall. Browse more diamond painting kits.
