That little Japanese bridge became one of Monet's favorite subjects. He painted it in 1899 in his own garden at Giverny, and kept returning to the scene for years.

This Monet diamond painting centers on the arch over the lily pond, so calm and green it feels like a held breath. Good for a reading room or a bedroom wall.

The Japanese Bridge in Monet's Garden

Monet built his water garden at Giverny in the 1890s and spanned the pond with an arched footbridge in the Japanese style. He was a keen collector of Japanese woodblock prints, which still hang in his house, and the bridge reflects that taste.

Later he added wisteria above it, and in his final years he painted the bridge in thick, fiery strokes. This view shows the calmer early version, framed by willows and floating lilies.

Why Did Monet Paint the Bridge So Often?

He had designed the garden as a subject to paint. He diverted water from a small branch of the river Epte to fill the pond, planted water lilies bought from a nursery, and kept gardeners busy holding everything just as he wanted it. Around 1899 he painted a whole series of views of the bridge.

Those pond pictures led to the huge Water Lilies panels of his last years, now installed in the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris.

Diamond Painting Monet's Pond

Most of this design is green, so the drills give lots of quiet shimmer across the foliage and water. Start with the bridge, which gives you a clear guide, then work outward through the trees and finish with the lily pads and pink blossoms. Working in small blocks keeps the many greens from getting mixed up.

Where Can You See Monet's Japanese Bridge?

Versions of the 1899 bridge are held by several major museums, including the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Monet's house and garden at Giverny are open to visitors, and a footbridge still crosses the lily pond.
