Why Did Van Gogh Paint So Many Sunflowers?

In August 1888 he painted four sunflower canvases in Arles to decorate the guest room for Paul Gauguin, and he made repeat versions the following January. The flowers wilt within days, so he had to work fast. Versions of the vase of sunflowers now hang in London, Amsterdam, Munich, Philadelphia and Tokyo.

The idea started in Paris. In 1887 he painted cut sunflower heads laid out on their own, and Gauguin liked them enough to trade one of his own paintings for two of them. In Arles the flowers became part of Van Gogh's dream of a Studio of the South, a house where artists would live and work together.

What to Look For in the Painting

Van Gogh wanted to see how far he could push a single color. In the best known versions the flowers, vase and background are almost all yellow, ochre and orange, with small touches of green and blue to keep them apart. Some flowers are fresh, some heavy with seed and some wilting, so the bunch shows a whole life cycle.

He used new, bright chrome yellow paints, and some of them have slowly darkened, so the originals were even sunnier when they left his studio.

Gauguin and the Sunflowers

Gauguin arrived in Arles in October 1888 and stayed about two months. During that time he painted his friend at the easel, at work on a sunflower canvas. Their time together ended badly that December, yet the sunflowers remain the pictures most people connect with Van Gogh.

When he made the repeat versions that January, he pictured two of them hanging on either side of his portrait La Berceuse, of Augustine Roulin, as a kind of triptych.

Sunflowers Diamond Painting: Placing Drills on the Yellows

The vase and the background are the broad areas, and they fill quickly. The flower heads hold the detail, with oranges, ochres and browns crowded together in the centers and petals. Do the background first, then the vase, and finish with the blooms from their dark centers outward.

A sunny pick for a yellow-loving friend. Browse more famous paintings and the full range of diamond painting kits.
