Mucha and the Champenois Printing House

F. Champenois was the Paris printing house behind many of Alphonse Mucha's most famous posters and decorative panels. Mucha signed an exclusive contract with the firm in the late 1890s, and its color lithographs spread his elegant women, halo-like circles and flowing hair across Europe. This detail focuses on one of those graceful figures.

Art for Everyday Walls

Born in Moravia in 1860, Mucha moved to Paris in 1887 and became the best known decorative artist of the Belle Époque. His panels for Champenois had no advertising text at all. They were printed simply to be hung at home, so ordinary people could own a piece of Art Nouveau.

Later he returned to his homeland and spent many years on The Slav Epic, a cycle of twenty huge canvases on Slavic history.
