In 1898, Alphonse Mucha painted The Rose, a young woman framed by pink roses in his flowing Art Nouveau style.

Zoom in on those roses. They curl around her and give the whole piece its softness, and as each section of this Mucha diamond painting fills in, the petals start to catch the light. A lovely pick for fans of classic beauty and vintage poster art.

The Rose and Mucha's Flower Series of 1898

The Rose comes from The Flowers, a set of four decorative panels Alphonse Mucha designed in 1898, alongside the Iris, the Carnation and the Lily. Each one pairs a young woman with a single bloom. By then Mucha was the most famous poster artist in Paris, and these panels were made to decorate homes rather than advertise products.

The panels were printed as color lithographs, a method that let Mucha's soft tones and fine lines reach many homes at once and helped spread Art Nouveau far beyond Paris.

How Mucha Became the Face of Art Nouveau

Alphonse Mucha was born in 1860 in Moravia, now part of the Czech Republic. His breakthrough came with Gismonda, a poster for the actress Sarah Bernhardt that appeared in Paris at the start of 1895 and led to years of work for her.

Later he returned home and devoted years to The Slav Epic, a cycle of twenty huge canvases on the history of the Slavic peoples.

Is The Rose a Good Diamond Painting for Fans of Art Nouveau?

Very much so. Art Nouveau depends on outlines and flowing curves, and Mucha drew his shapes clearly, which makes them easy to follow in drills. The dress and background are broad and soft, while the roses and the hair are full of small areas.

Many of Mucha's designs frame a woman's head with a circle of ornament, and here the flowers do similar work, so give the roses around her face extra care.

Fill the background and dress first, then build the roses petal by petal, and finish with her face.

Hang it in a bedroom, a powder room or next to vintage posters. See more in our diamond painting kits.
