Alphonse Mucha painted the moon as a woman, and here she glows inside his signature halo, draped in night and scattered with stars.

Zoom in on the curving linework around her; it's Art Nouveau at its most delicate. As a diamond painting, that halo really earns its sparkle. A lovely pick for a bedroom wall or any Mucha fan.

Mucha's The Moon and the Stars

Alphonse Mucha, the Czech star of Art Nouveau Paris, made The Moon and the Stars in 1902 as a set of four decorative panels: the Moon, the Evening Star, the Polar Star and the Morning Star. Each one is a woman standing in for a light in the night sky. This design takes a detail of the Moon.

Later in life Mucha returned to his homeland and spent many years on The Slav Epic, twenty huge canvases about the history of the Slavic peoples, but his Paris panels remain his best known work.

How Mucha Became the Face of Art Nouveau

Mucha was born in Moravia in 1860 and was working in Paris as a little known illustrator when, at the end of 1894, he designed a poster for Sarah Bernhardt's play Gismonda. Its tall format and graceful figure made him famous almost overnight, and Bernhardt signed him to a contract.

His decorative panels, like this set, were printed as lithographs for ordinary homes. Women framed by circles, flowers and stars became his signature, so recognizable that Parisians spoke of le style Mucha.

Why the Moon Panel Shines as a Diamond Painting

Mucha framed his figures in halos and flowing lines, and here the curving circle around the Moon is the most delicate part. In diamonds, that halo and the scattered stars catch light softly. The draped robe is built from calm, cool tones that fill in steadily.

Work the background first, then the robe, then the face and halo, checking symbols closely where the halo meets her hair. It is a lovely pick for a bedroom wall or any Mucha fan. For another of his figures, see our Ivy, Composition kit.
