Mucha's Four Seasons and the Spirit of Summer

In 1896 Alphonse Mucha designed The Seasons, a set of four decorative panels that pictured each season as a young woman. They were printed in Paris and sold so well that he came back to the theme in later years. Summer is the warmest of the four, with red poppies in her hair and golden, relaxed curves.

What to Look for in Summer

Each of the four women has her own mood. Spring is light and fresh, Autumn gathers fruit, Winter huddles against the cold. Summer simply rests, seated among greenery near water, with the ease of a long hot afternoon. The poppies in her hair tie her to the season of ripe fields.

Notice the frame. Mucha liked to set his figures inside arches or borders, so the panel reads almost like a window. The soft outlines and gentle colors were made to sit happily on a domestic wall.

Who Was Alphonse Mucha?

Born in Moravia, now part of the Czech Republic, in 1860, Mucha became famous almost overnight with his 1895 poster for Sarah Bernhardt's play Gismonda. His flowing lines, halos and floral borders helped define Art Nouveau, which Parisians sometimes simply called the Mucha style.

Decorative panels like The Seasons had no advertising text at all. They were made purely to be enjoyed at home, and they brought his style into ordinary houses across Europe.
