Mucha and the Seasons as Women

Alphonse Mucha became famous in Paris almost overnight with his 1895 poster for the actress Sarah Bernhardt. A year later he designed his first set of decorative panels showing the four seasons as women, and he returned to the theme several times. Autumn is the harvest figure, framed by fruit, flowers and warm golds and russets.

His seasons were not portraits of real women. They were ideals, each dressed, crowned and colored to match her time of year, and he used the same idea in later panel series on the arts, the flowers and the times of day.

Art Nouveau for Ordinary Homes

Decorative panels were prints without any advertising text, made to be framed and hung at home. They let people who could never buy an oil painting own a piece of the new style, and they helped spread Art Nouveau far beyond Paris.

Mucha wanted design to reach everyday life. In 1902 he published Documents décoratifs, a pattern book of ideas for jewelry, furniture, wallpaper and ornament that artisans could borrow from.
