Mucha's Primrose and Its Partner

Alphonse Mucha designed Primrose in 1899 as a decorative panel, a print meant for the wall rather than an advertisement. It was made as a pair with The Feather, each showing a woman framed by a circular halo of ornament. Panels like these sold widely in Paris and helped bring Art Nouveau into ordinary homes.

How Mucha Became the Face of Art Nouveau

Mucha was born in Moravia, now part of the Czech Republic, in 1860, and was working in Paris as a modest illustrator when his poster for the actress Sarah Bernhardt in the play Gismonda appeared at the start of 1895. It made him famous almost overnight. Soon his long-haired women, flowers and curling lines were everywhere.

Later he returned home and spent years on The Slav Epic, a cycle of twenty huge canvases.

What to Look For in Primrose

Everything curves. The woman's hair, the stems of the flowers and the lines of her dress all flow in the same direction. Behind her, the round halo works like a frame inside the frame, and the pale primrose blossoms are gathered close to her face, so your eye always comes back to it.

Working a Large Mucha Diamond Painting

This large diamond painting has two moods. The flowers and the curling geometric border are full of small, detailed areas, while the halo and background are broad and quick. Fill the background first, then the figure's dress and hair, and save the primrose blossoms for the end, where the sparkle shows best.

It makes an elegant centerpiece for a bedroom or dressing room. Find more art reproductions in our diamond painting kits.
