Who Painted Dogs Playing Poker?

Cassius Marcellus Coolidge, an American artist from upstate New York. In the early 1900s a calendar and advertising company commissioned him to paint a series of dogs playing cards, and the pictures went on to become a fixture of American pop culture, from basement rec rooms to cartoons.

The company was Brown and Bigelow of St. Paul, Minnesota, and the series ran to sixteen paintings. Coolidge had a varied career before that, working as a cartoonist and sign painter, and he is often credited with inventing the comic cutout boards that let you pose your face on a painted body.

What Is Happening in A Bold Bluff?

A big St. Bernard sits at the table holding a weak hand while the pile of chips in front of him says otherwise. The other dogs study him, trying to read his face. Coolidge painted a follow-up, Waterloo, that shows how the bluff turns out.

The joke works because the dogs behave exactly like people at a card table: the poker faces, the side glances, the cigar smoke under the lamp. That gentle humor is a big part of the series' lasting appeal.

A Bold Bluff Diamond Painting Tips

As a diamond painting, the green felt table and the lamp glow pick up a nice sparkle. Fill the large dark background first, then the table, then the dogs. Save the faces for last, when your placement is steady, since a few drills change each dog's expression.

More of his card players are in our Cassius Marcellus Coolidge collection, alongside our full range of diamond painting kits.
