Who Painted Dogs Playing Poker?

Cassius Marcellus Coolidge, an American artist and cartoonist from upstate New York, painted Poker Game in 1894. It is one of his earliest dogs at the card table. In 1903 the advertising firm Brown & Bigelow hired him to paint a series of dogs in human situations for calendars, and those images made his name.

Critics never took them seriously, but generations of game rooms did.

Why Dogs at a Card Table Are Funny

The humor works because the dogs behave exactly like people on a long night of cards: hunched over their hands, guarding their chips, trying to read the faces across the table. Artists had dressed animals up as people for centuries, but Coolidge set them in a smoky American parlor that everyone recognized.

This 1894 picture came almost a decade before the famous calendar series, so it shows the idea near its very start.

A Dogs Playing Poker Diamond Painting for the Game Room

The fun is in the faces. Each dog has its own poker face, and the cards, chips and cigars around the table add small details to pick out. The dark room around them fills in quickly, giving you calm stretches between the busier sections.

Start with the background, then the table, and finish with the dogs so their expressions come in last. It belongs in a basement bar or den, near the real card table. For more classic Americana, see our Mount Rushmore kit.

Pair It With the Rest of the Series

If you love this early game, the later pictures keep the joke going. A Friend in Need, painted in 1903, is the best known of them, with its ace slipped under the table, and the A Friend in Need diamond painting makes a natural partner.
