Alphonse Mucha and the JOB Poster

Alphonse Mucha was a Czech artist working in Paris who became famous almost overnight in 1895 with his poster for the actress Sarah Bernhardt. In 1896 he designed this ad for JOB, a French brand of cigarette rolling papers. The brand's monogram fills the background, and the woman's curling hair became a signature of the style known as Art Nouveau.

The design was so successful that he made a second JOB poster a couple of years later.

What Is Art Nouveau?

Art Nouveau was a style of the 1890s and early 1900s that turned to natural forms: vines, flowers, insects and flowing hair. It showed up on posters, jewelry, furniture and even the entrances to the Paris Métro. Mucha's version was so recognizable that people in Paris spoke of the Mucha style.

What to Look For in Job

The woman leans back with a cigarette, eyes half closed, and her hair spills out in loops that frame the whole poster. Notice how the curls echo the shapes of the lettering, so the image and the brand name read as one design.
