The Feather Design and Mucha's Decorative Panels

Alphonse Mucha created many decorative panels, prints meant simply to be hung and enjoyed rather than to sell a product. Feather comes from that tradition, and Mucha paired it with a companion panel, Primrose, around 1899. Its long, narrow format and curving lines are classic Art Nouveau, where nature and ornament blend into one flowing shape.

Mucha saw these panels as art for everyone. Printed in large runs, they let ordinary households hang the same elegant designs that wealthy collectors admired.

Who Was Alphonse Mucha?

Mucha was born in 1860 in Moravia, now part of the Czech Republic, and worked for years as a little known illustrator in Paris. His fortunes changed at the end of 1894, when he designed a poster for the actress Sarah Bernhardt in the play Gismonda. It caused a sensation, and Bernhardt signed him to a contract.

His graceful women, flowing hair and soft halo shapes became so familiar that people spoke of a Mucha style. Later he returned home and spent years on The Slav Epic, a cycle of twenty huge canvases on Slavic history.

Diamond Painting a Narrow Art Nouveau Design

Because the design is mostly soft curves and gentle color, it is a calm, steady project. Fill the background first, then follow the feather from its quill outward, keeping your rows aligned with the curve. Keep the pale shades sorted, since several sit close together.

The slim shape works well in a narrow space, and it makes a lovely pair with another vertical print. It also suits a bedroom or a dressing area. Find more designs among our diamond painting kits.
