Van Gogh and His Flowers

Flowers were one of Vincent van Gogh's favorite ways to study color. During his two years in Paris, from 1886 to 1888, he painted dozens of floral still lifes to train his eye, moving from dark Dutch tones to the bright, clashing colors he is known for today. He kept returning to bouquets for the rest of his life.

In his last weeks at Saint-Rémy, in May 1890, he painted several large bouquets of roses and irises before leaving for Auvers. They are among his calmest late works.

Why Some of Van Gogh's Pinks Have Faded

Some of the reds and pinks Van Gogh used were lake pigments that fade with exposure to light. Conservators have found that several of his flower paintings looked much pinker when he made them than they do today. His Roses at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, painted in 1890, once had pink petals that have faded nearly to white.

So when you see a soft pink in his work, it is worth remembering that he often chose bolder color than time has left.

Placing the Diamonds Petal by Petal

Roses are built from layers, with darker pinks deep inside each bloom and lighter tones on the outer petals. Fill the darkest centers of each rose first, then move outward, so every flower looks round and full. Leave the green leaves and the background until the roses are complete.

When you finish, step back from the canvas. The many pinks blend from a distance, much as his strokes do in the original paintings.

A Van Gogh Diamond Painting for a Floral Gift

Soft pinks fit well in a bedroom or a guest room with light, airy decor, and it makes a sweet Mother's Day or birthday present. For more works by the great painters, browse our famous paintings.
