Robert John Thornton and The Temple of Flora

Robert John Thornton was an English physician who spent much of his fortune on The Temple of Flora, a book of large botanical prints published between 1799 and 1807. Unlike most botanical plates, his flowers were set against dramatic landscapes and skies, making each print feel like a small stage set.

The Chinese Limodoron is his portrait of an orchid.

Why Did The Temple of Flora Nearly Bankrupt Thornton?

Large, hand finished color plates were enormously expensive to produce, and Thornton paid leading artists and engravers to make them. Sales never covered the cost, especially in wartime Britain. In a last attempt to recover his money he held a lottery, offering the original paintings and copies of the book as prizes. It did not save him.

Today complete copies are prized by collectors and libraries.

What to Look For in The Chinese Limodoron

Thornton treated each flower like the hero of a scene. The orchid stands large in the foreground, while the background is dark and theatrical. Look at the slender stems, the way the petals turn toward the light, and the contrast between the pale blooms and the moody setting behind them.

Orchid Diamond Painting: Placing Drills on Delicate Petals

Orchid petals have fine color changes and thin edges, and diamonds give those details a soft sparkle. Fill the moody background first, then the leaves and stems, and save the petals for last. Working from the center of the flower outward helps keep the petal edges neat.

Orchid growers and houseplant lovers will appreciate this one. It looks lovely in a bright bathroom, a sunroom or a home office full of greenery. Browse our full range of diamond painting kits for more botanical designs.
