Klimt's Sunflower and His Summers at Lake Attersee

Gustav Klimt spent many summers at Lake Attersee in Austria, painting gardens and landscapes far from the Vienna studio. The Sunflower, from around 1907, comes from those years. Rather than a field of flowers, he painted a single tall plant surrounded by a dense mass of leaves and blooms, standing almost like a figure in a gown.

He usually spent these holidays with Emilie Flöge and her family. For his landscapes he favored square canvases, and he is said to have used a viewfinder or opera glasses to frame close, flattened views. Few of these landscapes have any people in them.

Gold, Pattern and the Vienna Secession

Klimt co-founded the Vienna Secession in 1897 and is best known for golden works like The Kiss. Even in his flowers you can see the same love of ornament and flat, decorative pattern.

The Sunflower dates from the same years as The Kiss, the height of his golden period. Look at the leaves: they hang in layers like folds of fabric, and the small flowers at the base scatter like jewels along a hem.

Is the Sunflower Diamond Painting Good for Beginners?
