Klimt's Gardens on the Attersee

Most people know Gustav Klimt for gold leaf and portraits like The Kiss. Fewer know that he spent his summers at the Attersee, a lake in the Austrian countryside, painting gardens, orchards and shorelines. He often used square canvases and filled them edge to edge with flowers and leaves, almost like a woven carpet.

He went there with Emilie Flöge, his lifelong companion, and the long, quiet weeks by the lake gave him time for landscapes, which he painted for himself rather than for portrait clients.

Klimt and the Sunflower

Sunflowers turn up more than once in Klimt's garden pictures, standing tall among lower beds of flowers. He treated them almost like figures, with a dark center for a face and leaves falling around them like a gown.
