Paul Signac built his paintings out of small dabs of color, so turning his work into tiny diamonds feels oddly right. Flowering Trees shows spring blossoms in full bloom, that short window when everything turns bright at once.

This Paul Signac diamond painting would look lovely in an entryway or sunroom, and it's a cheerful thing to finish when winter drags on.

Paul Signac and the Divisionist Method

Signac (1863 to 1935) became the leading voice of Neo-Impressionism after the early death of his friend Georges Seurat in 1891. He placed small dabs of pure color next to each other and let the viewer's eye blend them, a technique he explained in his 1899 book From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-Impressionism.

Color Science on Canvas

Signac and Seurat were fascinated by the color theories of their day, especially the idea that colors placed side by side affect each other. A touch of orange next to blue makes both look stronger. Mixed on a palette, the same two would turn muddy. Kept separate, they stay bright and let the eye do the blending.

Over the years Signac's dots grew into wider, square strokes, laid down almost like tiles. His later landscapes and harbor views glow with clear, sunny color, much of it painted around Saint-Tropez on the Mediterranean coast.

What to Look for in Flowering Trees

Step close and the picture breaks into separate marks of pink, white, green and blue. Step back and they settle into blossoming branches against the sky. That shift between near and far is the whole pleasure of Neo-Impressionist painting, and it is worth trying with the finished piece on your wall.

Tips for This Spring Diamond Painting

The blossoms are the busiest area, with pinks, whites and greens packed tightly together. The sky and ground are calmer and fill faster. Work from the top down, finishing each tree's blossoms before moving on, so you can watch the light spread across the scene.

Because Signac already worked in points of color, the finished drills look close to his own surface. Browse more famous paintings or the full range of diamond painting kits.
