Paul Signac helped invent pointillism, building pictures out of tiny dabs of pure color. That makes his harbor at La Rochelle a natural match for a diamond painting, since each sparkling piece works just like one of his dots.

The maritime scene fits a coastal home, a bathroom with a nautical theme, or any room that could use some sea air.

Why La Rochelle Suits Diamond Painting

La Rochelle is an old Atlantic port on France's west coast, and its harbor mouth is guarded by two medieval stone towers that still stand. Signac, a passionate sailor, painted it several times, laying down little squares of pure color that let the light seem to flicker across the water and stone.

Those squares are exactly what diamonds are, which makes this one of the most natural matches between a painting style and the craft.

A Port With a Long History

La Rochelle grew rich on sea trade in the Middle Ages and later became a Protestant stronghold. In 1627 and 1628 Cardinal Richelieu besieged the town for more than a year. The old harbor survived, and sailing boats still tie up below the towers, much as they do in Signac's view.

Signac, Painter and Organizer

Signac was a leader of the Paris art world as well as a painter. In 1884 he helped found the Société des Artistes Indépendants, an open exhibition with no jury, and he later served as its president for many years. Sailing kept pulling him back to the coast.

Working Through the Harbor

Begin with the towers and the harbor wall, which give the scene its structure. Then fill the sails and boats, and leave the sky and water for last. They hold the most color changes, and that is where the sparkle comes alive.

It suits a coastal home or a bathroom with a nautical look. For another French harbor by a great painter, see Antibes Seen from the Salis Gardens by Monet.
