Paul Signac helped create Pointillism, building pictures out of tiny dots of color. That makes his Blessing of the Tuna Boats at Groix a natural fit for a Signac diamond painting, since the technique works a lot like his dots.

Fair warning: this one is intricate and best for an advanced crafter who wants a real challenge. The reward is a luminous maritime scene off the French isle of Groix.

Who Was Paul Signac?

Paul Signac (1863 to 1935) worked closely with Georges Seurat to develop Pointillism, also called Neo-Impressionism, in 1880s Paris. Instead of mixing colors on a palette, they placed small separate touches of pure color side by side and let the eye blend them. Signac loved the sea and sailed his own boats, and harbors became one of his great subjects.

The Île de Groix sits off the south coast of Brittany, where tuna fishing was once a major trade, and the blessing of the fleet was a local tradition before the boats left port.

Signac in Saint-Tropez

In 1892 Signac sailed into Saint-Tropez, then a quiet fishing port, and made it his home base. Younger painters followed him south. Henri Matisse spent the summer of 1904 there with Signac and soon afterward painted Luxe, Calme et Volupté in a dotted style he learned from him.

Signac also made many quick, airy watercolors of French ports, sketching boats and quays on the spot.

Why Signac Works So Well as a Diamond Painting

Each drill acts like one of his dots, so the image builds the same way his canvas did. This is an advanced, intricate design. Work in small blocks, finish one boat or one patch of water at a time, and step back now and then to see the colors blend from a distance.

Look at how the sails and flags break into small patches of pure color. Signac rarely blended paint, so the brightness comes from contrasting colors set next to one another, an idea diamond drills echo naturally.

It suits a beach house, a hallway with lots of daylight or the wall of anyone who loves boats.

For another French coastal boat scene, see Boat Lying at Low Tide, inspired by Monet.
