A Year of Flower Studies in Paris

Vincent van Gogh moved to Paris in 1886 to live with his brother Theo. That year he painted dozens of flower still lifes, partly because flowers were cheap models and partly to study color after seeing the Impressionists. Vase with Red Poppies comes from that period, and you can see him testing bright reds against greens and darker grounds.

That autumn he wrote to the English painter Horace Livens that he had been making a series of color studies of simple flowers, red poppies and blue cornflowers among them, trying to render intense color rather than a gray harmony.

What to Look For in the Poppies

The red petals are painted thickly and quickly, with little interest in botanical detail. What matters is how they sit against the cooler background and the dark green leaves, so the reds seem to come forward off the canvas. It is a study in contrast more than a portrait of a flower.

Flower pieces like this one were his practice ground in Paris, and two years later the same lessons fed the sunflowers he painted in Arles.

Vase with Red Poppies Diamond Painting Tips

The reds are what you notice first, and in diamond form they catch the light even more. The background and vase are broad areas that fill quickly. The poppy petals and leaves are where the detail is, so leave them until last.

Sort the reds before you start; there are several close shades, and keeping them in order makes the petals go down quickly. This is calm work that suits beginners and experienced crafters. It looks lovely in a kitchen or dining room. Find more classic art in our famous paintings collection.
