Who Was Sientje Van Houten?

Sientje Mesdag-van Houten was a Dutch painter of the Hague School and the wife of the marine painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag. She started painting seriously later in life and became known for still lifes, landscapes and flowers painted with a loose, expressive touch.

She also helped paint the Panorama Mesdag, the huge circular view of the sea and dunes at Scheveningen that her husband completed in 1881 and that visitors can still see in The Hague.

Tulips, Dutch Style

Few flowers are as tied to the Netherlands as the tulip, and Dutch painters have been putting them in vases for centuries. Van Houten's version is relaxed rather than formal. The petals are soft and slightly open, the leaves bend naturally, and the color carries the picture instead of fine detail.

The flower reached the Netherlands from the Ottoman Empire in the 1500s, and in the 1630s rare bulbs sold for extraordinary sums during the episode known as tulip mania.

Diamond Painting Soft Petals

Each tulip has several tones of red, pink or yellow, which gives the petals their roundness. Complete one flower at a time so you can see each bloom take shape. Do the background and vase first, then the leaves, then the tulips.

Pinks and reds sit close together in the petals, so place each shade in small clusters and check the symbol at the edges.

A Cheerful Spring Gift

It makes a cheerful spring gift for Easter, a birthday or Mother's Day. It also brightens a breakfast nook or a guest room year round. Find more flowers among our diamond painting kits.
