Maurice Brazil Prendergast stood apart from the other painters of The Eight with a delicate, mosaic-like way of building a picture.

Look closely and the flower bed breaks into small patches of color fitted side by side, almost like tiles. That style suits sparkle beautifully. This Prendergast diamond painting is a smart pick for fans of American Post-Impressionism and anyone who loves a garden scene.

Maurice Prendergast, the Odd One Out of The Eight

Prendergast was born in 1858 in St. John's, Newfoundland, and grew up in Boston. In 1908 he showed with The Eight at the Macbeth Gallery in New York, a group known mostly for gritty city scenes. Prendergast went his own way, painting parks, beaches and gardens in a bright, patterned style shaped by his years in Paris.

How Prendergast Painted

He was one of the first Americans to take up the ideas of Cézanne and the Post-Impressionists, and he showed in the 1913 Armory Show in New York. He worked often in watercolor and also made monotypes, a one of a kind print. His brother Charles, a skilled frame maker, was his close partner for life.

His figures and flowers are rarely detailed. Instead, small dabs of color sit side by side, so the whole picture shimmers like woven cloth.

Bed of Flowers Diamond Painting, Built Like a Mosaic

His habit of building a picture from small patches of color maps naturally onto diamond painting, where every drill is its own little tile. Start at the top of the canvas and work downward in strips, peeling back only a small section of the film at a time so the adhesive stays fresh.

Sort your drills by color family before you begin, since many neighboring patches are close in tone. Working in a good light helps you tell the soft pinks, corals and greens apart, and a tray for each family keeps the flower bed tidy.

Hang it with other famous paintings in a sunroom or a kitchen nook, where the garden colors can catch the daylight.
