Robert John Thornton and The Temple of Flora

Thornton was an English physician who poured his fortune into one grand book of flowers, The Temple of Flora, published in parts between 1799 and 1807. He hired painters such as Peter Henderson and Philip Reinagle to show each plant against a dramatic setting. The project nearly ruined him, but its plates are now prized by botanical art collectors.

Botany as Drama

Most botanical art of the time showed a single plant on a plain white page, drawn for scientific study. Thornton wanted something grander. He placed his flowers in front of mountains, stormy skies, ruins and moonlit landscapes, so that each plant looked like the hero of its own scene.

He was also a champion of the new plant classification system of the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus, and the book was meant to celebrate that science as well as the beauty of flowers. The mix of careful study and theatrical staging is what makes his plates unlike any others.

What to Look for in The Queen Plant

A single flower stands tall at the center, as if on a stage, with lush leaves framing it below. In Thornton's plates the setting is usually softer and moodier than the bloom, so the flower seems lit from within, and that contrast is what gives the book its theatrical feel.

Diamond Painting a Botanical Plate

The tall central flower holds the brightest drills and the sharpest detail, while the leaves and background are softer and broader. Start at the bottom with the foliage to warm up, then work upward into the bloom. A final check in daylight helps catch any missed spots before you frame it.
