Van Gogh's First Weeks in the Asylum Garden

In May 1889, within days of arriving at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh painted Irises. The flowers grew in the walled garden there, and painting them gave him steady work while he recovered.

He had asked to go there himself after a hard winter in Arles. Over the following year he would paint some of his best known pictures, including The Starry Night.

A Japanese Print Influence

Van Gogh collected Japanese woodblock prints, and you can see their influence in the strong outlines, the cropped edges and the flat areas of color. One white iris stands apart from the blue ones, a small surprise that draws the eye.

Look closely at the petals. Each one is outlined and then filled with a few strokes of light and dark blue and violet, so the bed reads as a crowd of separate flowers, all bending in different directions.

Where Is Van Gogh's Irises Today?

Irises belongs to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, which acquired it in 1990. Three years earlier it had sold at auction in New York for 53.9 million dollars, at that time the highest price ever paid for a painting.

Diamond Painting Irises

This design suits beginners and seasoned crafters. The blue petals have several close shades, so check your numbers before each new patch. The orange soil and green leaves are bolder and quicker. Work from the bottom up, then finish with the white iris.
