Van Gogh's Eye for Ordinary Places

Long before sunflowers and starry skies made him famous, Vincent van Gogh was drawn to modest homes and the people who lived in them. His letters to his brother Theo return often to ordinary working life. Houses and Figure belongs to that side of his work: a few humble houses, one solitary person and his signature brushstrokes.

Why Van Gogh Painted Humble Houses

Before he became a painter, Van Gogh worked as an art dealer, a teacher and a lay preacher among miners in Belgium. That time left him with deep sympathy for working people. When he began to paint, in his late twenties, he chose peasants, weavers, cottages and fields as his first subjects.

In the Dutch village of Nuenen, where his parents lived, he painted thatched cottages again and again, along with his dark early painting of farm life, The Potato Eaters, in 1885. Even after his colors brightened in Paris and Provence, he kept returning to simple houses and lone figures.

How to Approach This Houses and Figure Diamond Painting

The figure is small, but it gives the scene its meaning. Without it, this would be a view of buildings. With it, you start to wonder who this person is and where they are going. Notice how the brushstrokes in the walls, roofs and ground all move, so even a still scene feels alive.

The design is gentle and uncrowded, so it suits beginners as well as experienced crafters. Fill the broad open areas first. Then move to the walls and roofs, where Van Gogh's strokes turn into small shifts of color. Place the lone figure last, since that small shape anchors the whole scene.

More Van Gogh in Sparkle

The quiet mood suits a hallway or a bedroom as well. For a brighter Van Gogh subject, try our Les Iris diamond painting kit, full of the blue and violet flowers he loved to paint.
