Why Van Gogh Painted So Many Self-Portraits

Van Gogh made more than 35 self-portraits, most of them during his two years in Paris from 1886 to 1888. He often could not afford models, so he used a mirror and painted himself. The straw hat versions date from the summer of 1887, when he was trying out the bright colors and short strokes of the Impressionists.

Those straw hat portraits now belong to several museums, among them the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Met's version is painted on the back of an earlier work, The Potato Peeler, a sign of how carefully he used his materials.

What to Look For in the Portrait

Look at the strokes rather than the features. The hat is made of short yellow lines that run like woven straw, the background is a field of separate dabs, and even the face is built from touches of green, orange and blue. He was testing what he had learned from the Neo-Impressionists, in his own rougher hand.

The Paris self-portraits trace his change from dark Dutch tones to bright color in only a couple of years, so seeing them side by side is like watching him learn as he went.

Placing Van Gogh's Face in a Diamond Painting

The face and beard hold the subtlest color shifts, with greens, oranges and blues mixed into the skin. Work the background and clothing first to warm up, then the hat, and finish with the face. Check symbols closely around the eyes, since those few drills give the portrait its intense gaze.
